While it’s
true that camping trips are a great time to unplug and take a break from
being tethered to your electronic devices, there are a few ways technology
can actually help make your trips easier to plan and more enjoyable. Here are
a few apps you may want to download before your next trip. Unless otherwise
noted, they’re all available for both iOS and Android
devices:

  1. RV
    Checklist

(iOS only) – Don’t you just hate
it when you forget something? This app makes it easy for you to create master
lists of things to pack for each RV trip as well as to create maintenance “to
    do” lists.

  2. TripIt – By
creating a master itinerary for each of your trips and keeping all of your
reservations and confirmation numbers organized in one convenient place, this
app eliminates the tedious task of searching through your inbox for travel
    details.

  3. AllTrails  –
This hand-curated collection of trail guides can help you find the ideal
place to hike, bike or run when you travel, including kid- and dog-friendly
    trails.

  4. Roadside
    America

(iOS only) – If you love to visit quirky,
offbeat attractions, this is the app for you. It will guide you to
attractions near you and includes maps, directions, photos, stories and tips
    for visiting them.

  5. iNaturalist – A joint
initiative by the California Academy of Sciences and the National Geographic
Society, this app can help you identify the plants and animals around you,
connect with a community of scientists and naturalists and share your
observations to provide valuable research data.

  6. Nature
    Passport

    – Designed by experts in outdoor
play and experiential education, this app helps kids and their families play,
explore and learn about the outdoors through simple games and
    lessons.

  7. Merlin Bird
    ID
      – Have you ever
spotted a bird you’ve never seen before and wondered what it is? This app,
designed by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, will help you identify that bird
by answering a few simple questions about it or by snapping a
    photo.

  8. Star Walk
    2

     – One of many stargazing apps
available, Star Walk 2 can help you identify stars, constellations, planets,
satellites, asteroids, comets, the International Space Station, Hubble Space
Telescope and other celestial bodies in real time. All you need to do is to
point your device to the sky.

  9. GasBuddy – Of
course, you need to get where you going so you can enjoy all of these fun
outdoor activities. This simple app can help you find the nearest gas
stations when you travel along with the ones with the cheapest gas
    prices.
