Explore the captivating landscapes and fossilized treasures of Arizona's prehistoric world.

The best camping near Petrified Forest National Park — campgrounds and RV parks close to the park entrances and Route 66.

Arizona's Petrified Forest National Park offers a glimpse into a prehistoric world, where once towering trees have been transformed into remarkable natural sculptures that have stood the test of time. Millions of years ago, lush forests blanketed the area. Over time, these giants fell and were buried under layers of sediment. Volcanic ash, rich in minerals, seeped into the decaying wood, replacing the organic material with a hard, stone-like substance – petrified wood. Today, the park protects this incredible landscape, inviting visitors to explore a colorful tapestry of history and geology. The Petrified Forest is an essential stop for a Southwest road trip, offering an unforgettable experience of geological discovery and awe of the enduring legacy of the natural world’s greatest treasures.

Entering the park, the Painted Desert Visitor Center provides a valuable introduction. Exhibits showcase the park's formation, the vibrant fossil record, and the ancestral Puebloan people who once inhabited the area. Scenic drives through the park's two sections, the north and south, reveal breathtaking vistas. Pullovers along the way offer opportunities to stretch your legs, admire the colorful badlands, and snap photos of the petrified wood scattered across the landscape.

For those who want to delve deeper, the park has a network of hiking trails catering to hikers of all skill levels. The easy 0.8 mile Crystal Forest Trail goes through a dense concentration of petrified logs. The Giant Logs Trail, another easy option at 0.7 miles, leads past some of the park's most impressive petrified giants. Hikers seeking a more moderate challenge can tackle the 1 mile Blue Mesa Trail. This loop trail descends into the colorful Blue Mesa, offering views of the painted desert and petrified wood deposits.

While the petrified wood is the park's crown jewel, venturing outside its borders unlocks a treasure trove of additional experiences. A short drive east leads to the Painted Desert Inn, a historic landmark listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Completed in 1930, the inn blends with the colorful landscape and features stunning murals depicting the park's geology and human history.

Further east, visitors can explore the vibrant town of Holbrook. Route 66 enthusiasts will appreciate the town's nostalgic charm, with classic diners, motels, and neon signs lining the historic highway. Holbrook also offers a variety of restaurants, shops, and museums, providing a welcome respite after a day of exploring the natural wonders of the Petrified Forest.

No trip to the area is complete without experiencing the otherworldly beauty of Monument Valley. Located roughly 1.5 hours east of the Petrified Forest National Park, this Navajo Nation Tribal Park boasts towering sandstone mesas and buttes, many featured in iconic Western movies. Jeep tours offer a thrilling way to explore the valley's hidden canyons and learn about the Navajo culture.
