Hit the Road and Stay Connected: How to Maintain Relationships while Living in an RV

Living life on the road in an RV is an adventure of a lifetime. The freedom to explore new destinations, experience different cultures, and make memories that last a lifetime is unmatched. While the open road offers endless possibilities, it also presents challenges when it comes to staying connected with friends and family. After all, what good is an epic adventure without being able to share it with your loved ones? 

Fret not, fellow road warriors! After being on the road full-time for the past two years, we’ve developed a list of some innovative solutions for internet connectivity and a few tips for maintaining relationships so you can hit the road and stay connected with ease.

The Importance of Connectivity

In today's digital age, staying connected is more important than ever. Whether it's keeping in touch with friends and family, staying updated with work, or simply indulging in your guilty pleasure of binge-watching your favorite TV shows, reliable internet connectivity is a must. When you're living in an RV constantly on the move and away from traditional sources of the internet, it's crucial to find creative solutions to stay connected.

Internet Connectivity Solutions

Gone are the days when internet connectivity on the road was a distant dream. Thanks to advancements in technology, there are several options for staying connected while living in an RV. Here are a few solutions to consider:

1. Mobile Hotspots: Mobile hotspots are a game-changer for RVers. They allow you to connect to the internet using cellular data, just like you would on your smartphone. Many mobile carriers offer unlimited data plans specifically designed for mobile hotspots, which can provide a reliable and fast internet connection on the road. We currently have four different hotspots across three different carriers to make sure we have our bases covered for reliable coverage.

2. RV Park Wi-Fi: Many RV parks and campgrounds offer Wi-Fi to their guests. You can add a search filter specifically for this amenity using Spot2Nite. While the quality and reliability of RV park Wi-Fi may vary, it can be a convenient option for staying connected without relying on your mobile data. However, it's always a good idea to have a backup option in case the park Wi-Fi is slow or unreliable…which often is the case, especially during peak camping seasons.

3. Satellite Internet: If you're planning to spend an extended period of time in remote areas without cellular coverage, satellite internet can be a viable option. While it may be more expensive and require additional equipment, satellite internet can provide reliable connectivity in even the most remote locations. We currently subscribe to Starlink for RVers, and while it still has its challenges, it provides the most reliable high-speed connection we have in our arsenal. 

4. Wi-Fi Extenders: Wi-Fi extenders are devices that amplify existing Wi-Fi signals, allowing you to connect to Wi-Fi from a greater distance. They can be a helpful tool for boosting weak campground Wi-Fi signals and improving your overall internet connectivity. While we have used this solution, just remember that these solutions are only extending and amplifying the existing signal. So…garbage in, garbage out. Quality signal in, quality signal amplified! 

5. Work from Coffee Shops and Libraries: When you're in an area with limited internet connectivity, coffee shops and libraries can be a godsend. Many coffee shops and libraries offer free Wi-Fi, making them great spots to work, connect with loved ones, and catch up on your favorite TV shows.

Tips for Maintaining Relationships

Staying connected online is just the first step; maintaining relationships while living in an RV requires effort and creativity. Here are some tips to help you keep those bonds strong:

1. Schedule Regular Video Calls: Video calls are a fantastic way to stay connected with friends and family, no matter where you are. Schedule regular video calls to catch up, share stories, and see each other's smiling faces. You can use popular video call platforms like Zoom, FaceTime, or Skype, and even plan virtual game nights or watch parties to make it more fun and interactive.

2. Share Your Adventures on Social Media: Social media can be a great tool for sharing your travel adventures with your loved ones. Share photos, videos, and updates on social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, or a personal travel blog. It's a fun way to keep your friends and family updated on your travels and make them feel like they are a part of your journey, even from afar.
