Shell Island Fish Camp
Saint Marks, Florida
5 Park Models
Shell Island Fish Camp has operated at 440 Shell Island Road in Saint Marks, Florida, since 1952—a Wakulla County marina, fish camp, and RV resort on the St. Marks River where the river's tidal estuary transitions toward Apalachee Bay and the Gulf of Mexico. The fish camp's seven-decade operating history reflects the persistent appeal of the St. Marks River corridor as a Gulf fishing and natural history destination, where the tidal rivers and salt marsh ecosystem of the Big Bend coast provide access to the Apalachee Bay fishery and the St. Marks National Wildlife Refuge's 70,000 acres of coastal habitat.
Twenty-five RV sites with full hookups — water, sewer, and electric — provide shaded, quiet camping with direct river proximity, alongside motel rooms, rustic cabins, and park model rentals that give the fish camp flexibility for guests who want enclosed accommodation with easy marina access. The full-service marina includes a boat ramp, boat docks, boat rentals, fishing charter services, bait and tackle shop stocked for Gulf and river fishing, fish cleaning station, and expert boat repair — the complete infrastructure for a serious fishing operation that has been refined through seven decades of servicing anglers on the St. Marks River. A covered pavilion with picnic tables provides group gathering space, and laundry and dump station facilities complete the practical infrastructure.
The St. Marks National Wildlife Refuge, accessible by water from the fish camp and by road from the park entrance a few miles east, is one of the oldest refuges in the Southeast — established in 1931 on the Gulf Coast of the Florida Panhandle's Big Bend, it protects 70,000 acres of salt marsh, pine flatwoods, freshwater impoundments, and open Gulf coastline that support one of the most biologically diverse coastal refuge ecosystems on the Gulf Coast. The refuge's wading bird, shorebird, and migratory waterfowl concentrations — particularly the spectacular shorebird migration on the Gulf salt flats in May and August — attract birders from across the Southeast, and the St. Marks Lighthouse on the refuge, built in 1842 from limestone quarried on the site, is one of the oldest Gulf Coast lighthouses still in operation.
The Apalachee Bay fishery accessible from the fish camp targets the species that define the Florida Gulf Coast flats fishing reputation: spotted sea trout, redfish, flounder, and sheepshead in the shallow grass flats and oyster-bar edges, and offshore species including grouper, amberjack, and king mackerel in the Gulf proper for guests who charter the deeper-water boats. The St. Marks River's tidal reach supports snook, tarpon, and black drum in the lower river and estuary sections, providing in-river fishing variety that supplements the bay and Gulf options. The St. Marks Historic Railroad State Trail, a paved multi-use path on the old Tallahassee-to-St. Marks rail corridor, provides 16 miles of biking and walking access from Saint Marks north to Tallahassee.
Shell Island Fish Camp operates year-round in the north Florida Gulf Coast climate where Wakulla County's position at the Florida Big Bend — where the Gulf Coast turns from north-south to east-west — delivers a microclimate influenced by both the Gulf's warm water and the adjacent continental land mass. Winter temperatures are mild enough for comfortable camping and productive saltwater fishing throughout the December through February period, and spring from March through May provides the combination of pleasant temperatures and productive fishing that makes the Big Bend coast one of the more underappreciated Gulf camping destinations. Tallahassee is 20 miles north and provides urban services and the Florida State University cultural infrastructure.
