Foxfire of Murphy RV Park

Murphy, North Carolina

18 RV Sites

Foxfire of Murphy RV Park occupies an intimate 18-site property in Murphy, North Carolina—the Cherokee County seat and the westernmost city of any size in North Carolina, positioned in the Appalachian Mountain ridge-and-valley terrain at the convergence of the Hiwassee and Valley Rivers near the Tennessee and Georgia state lines. Murphy's tri-state position at the corner of three Appalachian states gives the surrounding landscape an outdoor recreation variety—mountain lakes, whitewater rivers, casino entertainment, and Cherokee history—that few small Appalachian cities match, and Foxfire of Murphy's year-round operation and intimate boutique scale make it a genuine home base for extended mountain stays. Eighteen sites with 30 and 50-amp full hookup service, water, and sewer provide a manageable, never-crowded camping environment that the owners have specifically designed around a small-park philosophy emphasizing a quiet, personal atmosphere. Reliable high-speed WiFi services the whole property, with optional fiber optic connections directly to individual sites for guests who need dedicated professional-grade bandwidth for remote work. Clean bathrooms, showers, laundry, and firewood provided at every fire-pit site handle the daily comfort logistics, and a dedicated dog area accommodates traveling pets in a mountain setting where the hiking trails within and adjacent to the property extend the outdoor experience beyond the campground boundaries. Murphy's Appalachian landscape is defined by the ridge-and-valley terrain of the Blue Ridge Province where the Hiwassee River's drainage has cut through the mountains in gorges and bottomlands that provide both agricultural valley floor and the dramatic high-country ridgeline character of the southern Appalachians. The Murphy River Walk, a paved trail along the Hiwassee and Valley Rivers in the downtown corridor, provides easy-access riverside walking within a mile of the campground, and the Piney Knob Trail System north of town offers the more challenging ridge hiking characteristic of the Blue Ridge terrain. Cherokee County's lakes are the region's primary recreational infrastructure: Lake Hiwassee and Appalachia Lake in the Hiwassee River system, Lake Chatuge straddling the North Carolina-Georgia line at Hayesville, and Nottely Lake south toward Blue Ridge, Georgia. These four lakes provide over 50,000 total surface acres of water recreation—bass and trout fishing, boating, and lake swimming—in a mountain lake environment where the surrounding Nantahala National Forest ridgelines provide the backdrop for a distinctly Appalachian lake experience. Harrah's Cherokee Valley River Casino, on the Qualla Boundary of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians 45 minutes northeast, provides gaming and entertainment in a facility that has also become one of the anchors of Western North Carolina's tourism economy. Foxfire of Murphy operates year-round as one of the few campgrounds in the Murphy area that maintains winter availability, making it a base for the winter lake fishing and the surprisingly mild Murphy winter climate where temperatures moderate compared to the higher-elevation communities to the northeast. Fall foliage in the Cherokee County mountains peaks from mid-October through early November—slightly later than the higher elevations farther north—and the combination of color, cooler temperatures, and reduced summer crowds makes the Foxfire of Murphy experience at its most atmospheric in the October–November window. The park's 2025 Campspot Hidden Gem award reflects the satisfaction of guests who discover a thoughtfully operated small-park alternative to the larger resort-scale campgrounds that dominate the Western North Carolina market.
