Buffalo Run RV Park
Jefferson, Texas
20 RV Sites
Buffalo Run RV Park sits at the gateway to Jefferson, Texas—one of the most historically preserved small cities in the Deep South and the heart of Caddo Lake country in the Big Cypress bayou drainage of northeast Texas. The park positions guests within minutes of Caddo Lake, the only naturally formed lake in Texas, and within sight of Lonesome Dove Safari Park next door, making it one of the more unusually well-located campgrounds in East Texas for families who want both natural landscape and unexpected attraction in the same day trip.
Full hookup RV sites with water, electric, and sewer serve campers, with showers, laundry, and dump station handling the practical daily needs. Cabins are available for guests who prefer enclosed accommodation. WiFi is provided throughout the property, and the pet-friendly policy accommodates travel dogs. The campground's position on the east Texas piney woods fringe gives it the characteristic deep-green, heavily shaded character of the region—loblolly and shortleaf pines, sweet gum, and the dense understory that defines the Piney Woods ecoregion's visual identity. Lonesome Dove Safari Park, immediately adjacent to the campground, provides a drive-through wildlife encounter with over 700 animals across 90 species, a petting zoo, and a gift shop—an on-site entertainment option that requires nothing more than a short drive from the campsite.
Caddo Lake is a few minutes away and represents one of the most ecologically distinctive freshwater environments in North America. The lake's extraordinary landscape of bald cypress forest, Spanish moss, and lily-pad-covered backwaters was created partly by a massive natural log jam—the Great Raft—that formed in the Red River over centuries and backed water into the Big Cypress watershed. The result is a labyrinthine system of sloughs, bayous, and open water that rewards kayakers and small-boat anglers who are willing to spend time learning its geography. Bass, catfish, and crappie fishing is consistently productive, and the lake's Great Blue Heron and egret rookeries give it a wildlife spectacle that has few equivalents in inland Texas.
Jefferson itself is a remarkably well-preserved antebellum river town that once rivaled Galveston as the most important commercial city in Texas, when the natural waterway of Big Cypress Creek allowed steamboat access from New Orleans. The city's historic district preserves iron-front commercial buildings, Greek Revival mansions, and the Excelsior House Hotel—a pre-Civil War lodging property that counts Jay Gould and Presidents Rutherford B. Hayes and Ulysses S. Grant among its former guests. Jefferson's reputation for ghost tours and historic lodging draws weekend visitors from Dallas, Shreveport, and the Texas Piney Woods in numbers that make it one of the more active small-city tourism destinations in East Texas.
Buffalo Run RV Park operates year-round in a climate where East Texas winters are mild and spring through fall deliver the most rewarding conditions for lake exploration and outdoor recreation. Caddo Lake's spring wildflower season—when the water lotus and American lotus bloom across the lake's open bays—is one of the most visually spectacular periods for a visit, and the fall color of the bald cypress turning copper-orange in November rivals any foliage display in the Southeast. Weekend reservations book quickly given Jefferson's consistent draw as a day-trip destination from the Dallas corridor.
