Amarillo RV Resort
Amarillo, Texas
76 RV Sites, 4 Cabins
On the High Plains of the Texas Panhandle, where Interstate 40 cuts through Amarillo's commercial west side on the path that traces the old US Route 66 corridor, Amarillo RV Resort provides a full-service campground with 178 sites—147 of which are 90-foot pull-through configurations—a layout that serves the cross-country traveler who needs to stay hitched and roll out at dawn as efficiently as it serves the destination visitor who comes to the Panhandle for Palo Duro Canyon, Cadillac Ranch, and the authentic Route 66 heritage that Amarillo maintains better than almost any other city along the old Mother Road. Cottages, a heated pool, a dog run, and free Wi-Fi complete the resort infrastructure for guests who plan to linger a day or two rather than simply overnight.
One hundred forty-seven pull-through sites with 20/30/50-amp electric, water, and sewer full hookups accommodate the widest rigs and longest motorhomes without the reverse-and-maneuver process that back-in sites require, and the remaining sites provide full hookups with the same connectivity for guests who don't need the pull-through convenience. Well-appointed cottage rentals extend accommodation options for guests traveling without an RV, and the heated pool, dog run, and community spaces provide the on-property recreation infrastructure for guests spending downtime between Amarillo's landmark attractions.
Palo Duro Canyon State Park, about 30 miles southeast of Amarillo, drops 800 feet into the Texas Panhandle's flat plain in a dramatic revelation of stratified canyon walls that earned it the title "Grand Canyon of Texas" and provides 30 miles of hiking, mountain biking, and equestrian trails through terrain that the surrounding Great Plains give no hint of from the surface. The Pioneer Amphitheater in the canyon hosts "Texas," an outdoor musical drama that has run each summer since 1966 and tells the story of the Texas Panhandle's pioneer settlement against the backdrop of a 600-foot canyon wall—one of the most dramatic theatrical settings in North America.
Cadillac Ranch, Stanley Marsh 3's public art installation where ten Cadillacs are buried nose-down in a Panhandle field along the old Route 66 alignment, stands as Amarillo's most photographed landmark and one of the most-visited free art attractions in America—a monument to the road, the car, and the mythology of movement that Route 66 created. The Big Texan Steak Ranch, Amarillo's legendary 72-ounce steak challenge restaurant and motel complex on East Amarillo Boulevard, has served travelers since 1960. The Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum in Canyon, 15 miles south, houses the most comprehensive collection of Texas and Plains history in the state, and the American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame and Museum in Amarillo celebrates the breed most identified with Western cattle ranching culture.
The Amarillo area's High Plains climate delivers warm, dry summers and cold winters with the significant wind that the Texas Panhandle's flat, treeless landscape channels with minimal obstruction. Spring brings the most unpredictable weather—including the late-March and April severe weather season that sends travelers to sturdy shelter—but also the wildflower season and the most dramatic sky displays that the Panhandle is famous for. Fall is arguably the most pleasant camping season, with the summer heat gone and Palo Duro Canyon's cottonwood and hackberry foliage adding seasonal color to a landscape that the surrounding Great Plains keep in shades of brown and gold through most of the year.
