Elwha RV Park in Port Angeles, Washington, is a campground alongside the Elwha River gorge in Clallam County — a nature retreat adjacent to one of the most significant ecological restoration sites in American conservation history, where the 2012 removal of the Elwha and Glines Canyon Dams — the largest dam removal project in US history — returned the Elwha River's salmon and steelhead to 70 miles of upstream habitat after a century of dam blockage, creating the ongoing wild salmon recolonization of the river's former spawning grounds in Olympic National Park's river corridor. The campground's Elwha River gorge position gives guests the immediate proximity to both the river's ecological restoration story and the Olympic National Park's Hurricane Ridge, Lake Crescent, and the Hoh Rainforest in the most geologically and biologically diverse national park in the western United States. RV sites and tent camping along the Elwha River gorge with the practical campground infrastructure give Elwha RV Park the Port Angeles-area base for the full Olympic Peninsula day-trip itinerary that the campground's US-101 access enables — the Hurricane Ridge subalpine meadow, the Lake Crescent azure depths, the Sol Duc Hot Springs, and the Hoh Rainforest's old-growth Sitka spruce and western red cedar canopy are all accessible as day trips from the Elwha campground's position west of Port Angeles on the Elwha Road. Pets are welcome. The Elwha River dam removal and restoration, the former Elwha Dam and Glines Canyon Dam sites visible from the campground and accessible by the former reservoir's newly restored river channel, is the most actively monitored and most studied large-scale ecosystem restoration in North American conservation science — the Chinook salmon, coho salmon, steelhead, and bull trout populations that have colonized the restored Elwha upstream of the former dams are reestablishing the historic spawning runs that the Elwha Klallam Tribe's treaty fishing rights and the Pacific salmon ecosystem's nutrient cycling specifically depended on for cultural and ecological significance before the 1913 Elwha Dam's construction blocked the river's salmon passage. Hurricane Ridge, 17 miles south of Port Angeles via Hurricane Ridge Road in Olympic National Park, is the most accessible subalpine and alpine terrain in the continental United States — a visitor center and meadow complex at 5,242 feet with panoramic views of the Olympic Mountains' glacier-covered interior peaks, the Strait of Juan de Fuca, and Vancouver Island across the Canadian border, accessible by the paved Hurricane Ridge Road that gives the subalpine meadow's summer wildflower blooms and the winter ski and snowshoe terrain their specific road-accessible character that distinguishes the Hurricane Ridge from the backcountry-only Olympic Interior. Elwha RV Park serves guests year-round in Clallam County's temperate Pacific Northwest marine climate, where the mild winters sustain year-round Olympic National Park access and the summer months from June through September represent the peak visitor demand for the Hurricane Ridge wildflower bloom and the Lake Crescent swimming and kayaking season. Port Angeles's urban amenities — the Arthur D. Feiro Marine Life Center on the city pier, the Clallam County Historical Museum, and the ferry terminal for the Black Ball ferry to Victoria, BC — give the campground's guests the coastal and cultural day-trip range in addition to the Olympic National Park's wilderness and mountain access. Reserve sites ahead for the summer Olympic National Park peak season and the BC ferry shoulder-season crossing weekends.
