5.01 reviews
Riffe Lake Campground on the banks of Riffe Lake in Mossyrock, Washington puts guests within striking distance of two of the Pacific Northwest's most dramatic volcanic landmarks while offering a full slate of lake-based recreation on one of the region's most scenic reservoirs. A privately owned, well-maintained property in Lewis County, this campground serves as a natural basecamp for day trips to both Mount Rainier and Mount St. Helens — a double-header combination of geological majesty that's nearly impossible to match anywhere else in the continental United States. Seventeen full hookup RV sites, 18 sites with water and power, 13 tent sites, 8 group sites, and 5 rustic camper cabins give guests a range of accommodation options across the property. Riffe Lake itself provides kayaking, canoeing, swimming, boating, and fishing from the campground's shores, with beautiful coves, accessible waterfalls, and miles of lake-adjacent hiking trails extending the recreational options well beyond the water's edge. Pets are welcome throughout the park. The Lewis County landscape surrounding Riffe Lake is quintessentially Pacific Northwest — dense conifer forest, volcanic geology visible in the distant peaks, and a quality of light and air that reminds visitors why the Pacific Northwest draws outdoor enthusiasts from around the world. The Gifford Pinchot National Forest encompasses the broader landscape and provides virtually unlimited backcountry access for hikers and explorers willing to venture beyond the lakeshore. Ike Kinswa State Park is just five minutes from the campground and offers additional camping, swimming, and boating access on adjacent Mayfield Lake. Mount Rainier National Park — with its iconic glaciated summit, Paradise meadows, and the Skyline Trail — is within an hour or two of camp, while Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument offers a dramatically different volcanic landscape where the 1980 eruption's impact remains as vivid today as it was in the decade that followed. White Pass Ski Lodge, an hour away, extends the area's appeal into the winter months for shoulder-season campers. Riffe Lake Campground's most active season runs late spring through early fall, with summer bringing the warmest lake temperatures for swimming and water sports. The proximity to Mount Rainier makes it a popular base for national park visitors — reserve sites well in advance for summer weekends. The Mossyrock campground's position between two active volcanic landmarks in the southern Washington Cascades makes it a uniquely compelling destination for anyone exploring this remarkable corner of the Pacific Northwest.
