The hour just before sunset is the best time to be paddling on the waters of Casco Bay. The sky tends to explode with color and the seas often become glassy and calm. This trip involves a leisurely paddle just far enough along the waterfront or into the islands to enjoy a panoramic view of the sun setting over the city as we paddle back to the East End Beach.  This two-hour tour is designed for paddlers of all experience levels -- including first-time kayakers.

Our Full-Day Kayak Tour is a chance to sea kayak to some of the most historically fascinating and scenic landmarks in the Portland region. Unlike our other tours, we limit this trip to 6 or fewer people and we require participants to have at least one previous sea kayaking experience. You'll spend the day island-hopping through the rugged islands of Casco Bay. Along the way you'll visit several 19th century forts, paddle past lighthouses and feel the swell of the open ocean underneath your kayak. 

On this trip we often visit some of Casco Bay’s lighthouses and forts, including Spring Point Light, Fort Preble, Portland Head Light, Fort Scammel, Ram Island Light, Bug Light and Fort Gorges. You'll also have the chance to hone your paddling skills, learn about the natural history of the area, visit islands on the Maine Island Trail and spot wildlife like seals, osprey and eiders. You'll see many sides of Casco Bay, including the bustling working waterfront of Portland harbor, the cliff-lined outer islands exposed to the open ocean and the more protected coves lined with beaches.  

This trip is designed for paddlers of a range of skill levels and the group will take many breaks and stops along the way. However, the trip does involve a very full and active day, so we suggest our shorter trips for first-time kayakers or anyone who has difficulty with prolonged physical activity. All participants should have tried sea kayaking at least once before. This trip sometimes starts in a different location than our main site (due to a one-way route), so you may be transported by van to the launching site at the start of the trip. The cost of this trip includes a delicious picnic lunch, with a vegetarian option.

The slower pace of this tour is perfect for families with younger children.  We'll take it easy, leaving plenty of time for kayak skill-building, wildlife-spotting and paddling fun.  Only children 7 and older may join our trips due to the size of our sea kayaks and other equipment.  All children younger than 12 must paddle in a tandem kayak with an adult.

Maine’s southern Midcoast region, stretching from Phippsburg to Pemaquid Point, features a dense network of river estuaries, long peninsulas and rocky islands. One of the largest watersheds in the state, the Kennebec-Androscoggin river system, pours into the ocean here, creating long, sandy beaches, expansive marsh grasslands, strong tidal currents and a vibrant marine ecosystem. This complex system of waterways, along with plenty of island campsites, creates endless opportunities for exploration by sea kayak. This three-day trip involves camping on the Maine Island Trail while navigating through a diverse mix of these coastal environments.

##Where You’ll Paddle
You’ll start this trip on the Kennebec River near Bath, Maine, a scenic town known for its long history of shipbuilding and home to both the Maine Maritime Museum and Bath Iron Works. From there you’ll paddle down the river towards the ocean. Tidal currents are strong in this area, so your guide will choose a route that takes maximum advantage of the tidal cycles. You may trace the flow of one of the tidal rivers that connects the Kennebec River to Hockmock Bay,  or you may follow the Kennebec all the way to Popham Beach, which faces the open ocean. Eventually, you’ll paddle along the exposed coastline and watch the swell crash against the basalt bedrock.

Finally, you’ll approach Knubble Bay and the Sheepscot River and will paddle into one of the region’s many scenic harbors, such as Wiscasset or Boothbay Harbor, where our van will be waiting to drive the group back to Portland.


## Logistical Details
The group meets at 8:00 AM at Portland Paddle on the first day and will return by 4:30 PM two days later. Portland Paddle will transport the group roughly 60-90 minutes north to the launch site.  

Tents are included in the cost of this trip, but we ask participants to either bring their own sleeping bags and sleeping pads or rent them from us for a small additional fee.

Fort Gorges, a Civil War-era granite fort surrounded by water, is one of the most fascinating spots in Casco Bay, and it's only accessible by small boat. The former parade grounds, surrounded by gorgeous granite walls, is a remarkably ideal spot for yoga. The trip will begin with your licensed kayak guide offering a basic kayak lesson and then leading the group on a paddle through Portland harbor and across open water to tiny Hog Island. You'll land on a beach by the fort's entrance and explore its elegant granite halls and dark passageways. Make sure you check out the gorgeous view of the Portland skyline from the rooftop!  

Then your yoga class will begin in the grassy, calm parade grounds of the fort. You'll stretch, strengthen and rejuvenate. The yoga class is suitable for all ages & abilities. The kayaking part of the trip is great for all skill levels -- even first-time kayakers. Please keep in mind that Fort Gorges is a historical structure that is not currently maintained, so there are no bathroom facilities and there are unlit areas that require caution when exploring.

The silence and darkness that envelopes Casco Bay at night can be incredibly peaceful. But there's also plenty to look at: The stars overhead, the sparkling bioluminescence in the waters below and the flickering lights of the Portland skyline. This tour offers a chance to see an entirely different side of Portland harbor when a full moon lights up the bay.

Your guide will start your tour off with a brief paddling lesson and safety talk before leading you past rocky Fish Point and towards Portland harbor.  Then you'll glide through the darkening waters looking out for seals and bioluminescence as you make your way back to the mainland. The group will stick close together, keeping track of each other with the help of flashlights.

**PARKING:** There is free all-day parking in the lot halfway up the hill on Cutter Street, as well as on most streets in the residential neighborhoods nearby. Most of the spaces right next to the beach are limited to 5 minutes or two hours.

**BATHROOMS:** There are public bathrooms and changing rooms that are open during limited hours. We also have a portable toilet that is just for our customers. 

**WHEN & WHERE TO ARRIVE:** Please arrive ten minutes before your tour is scheduled to start. You will see our signs at the end of Cutter Street by the East End Beach. Use the map above to find us or view the directions on our website.

Spend a day on the water with guide Suzanne Blackburn learning and practicing some of the essential skills involved in sea kayak navigation. This course will prepare you to read a nautical chart, follow the rules of the road when crossing boat channels, and use a compass to plot a course. You’ll spend most of the day on the water getting firsthand experience applying these skills. The group will move at a modest pace and take many breaks, but all students should be prepared for a full day of paddling. Please pack a lunch. 

We developed this course as an on-water counterpart to our Ocean Skills navigation workshop, but no prior navigation experience is required. Anyone with prior sea kayaking experience is welcome. The cost of using a kayak is included in the price, though you are also welcome to use your own. Students are asked to bring a handheld compass and a nautical chart of Casco Bay. These items are also available for purchase at Portland Paddle. (Sharing with one other person is okay).

Wherever ocean swell crashes into rocky shorelines there are opportunities for sea kayakers to find play and challenge. It’s called rock gardening, and it involves paddling into the the waves and whitewater along the most exposed coastlines. Like whitewater kayakers, rock gardening sea kayakers are drawn to exciting and dynamic waters that require a wide range of paddling skills. Instead of avoiding these turbulent waters, this workshop will lead you right into them. 

This workshop is solely for intermediate or advanced sea kayakers with self-rescue skills and experience with bracing and edging. Portland Paddle will provide helmets and other paddling gear for all students who do not have their own. We will choose the location for this course two days in advance and notify students by email. This will allow us to choose the best location based on surf and wind conditions.

Rock Gardening Workshop

This course introduces students to the essential theory and skills involved in surfing a sea kayak. Students will spend time in the surf zone getting comfortable launching, landing and riding waves. They will also gain a better understanding of how waves work, where to find them and how to predict their size and shape. 

The course will take place at a location within 20 miles of Portland which will depend on current surf conditions. Students will be notified of the location, and be given directions and parking details, the day before the course. 

This course is for students with solid self-rescue skills and experience with bracing and edging. Helmets will be provided and worn at all times in the surf zone.

Our summer Paddle Camp offers kids a chance to have fun on the waters of Casco Bay while learning paddling skills with our team of passionate paddlers.  Each session accepts 12 or fewer campers and is led by experienced kayak and SUP instructors, including at least one licensed Maine guide. Our aim is for campers to finish the week with new paddling skills and knowledge about the marine environment that they'll value for the rest of their lives. 

We'll teach campers about seabirds, paddling strokes, kayak rescues, SUP yoga, nautical charts and much more. We'll play plenty of games and we'll paddle solo kayaks, SUPs and tandem kayaks. Our main priority at all times is safety -- especially when paddling on the waters of Casco Bay.

This three-day guided expedition begins in Portland and island-hops across the breadth of Casco Bay. Along the way, you'll camp on the islands of the Maine Island Trail and experience the diverse environments found in the bay -- from the exposed ocean-like conditions along the outer islands to the calm and peaceful estuaries of the inner waters. 

**Where You’ll Paddle**
You’ll start out kayaking alongside the busy working waterfront of Portland harbor and quickly pass into calmer waters and past tiny island hamlets, hidden beaches and rugged, rocky headlands. We often spend the first night on Jewell Island, a large, wild island with gorgeous trails to explore, or on Bangs Island, a less visited gem with panoramic views of the bay. From there we often island-hop west towards Harpswell, either returning to Jewell for a second night or camping on Whaleboat Island, Rasperry Island or another nearby site on the Maine Island Trail. 

Our route will depend on the conditions and the group, but you can plan on several hours of paddling each day (with many breaks) as we traverse the bay.  There will also be plenty of time for exploring and relaxing on the islands. 

**Logistical Details**
This trip is great for first-time kayak campers as well as those who have experience with paddling expeditions. Some prior ocean kayaking experience is required, however. If you are new to sea kayaking, we suggest taking one of our lessons before signing up for this trip. That said, your guide will provide basic instruction, and there will be plenty of opportunities to improve your paddling skills along the way. 

 Portland Paddle will provide all meals, an expert guide, kayaking gear, two dry bags, drinking water, and basic camping and cooking gear. Many people prefer to use their own tents, but we can provide them at no additional cost. You should bring your own sleeping bag and sleeping pad, or you can rent from us for an additional fee. Additional dry bags, and coldwater paddling gear such as wetsuits and neoprene booties are available for rent. 

The group will gather at 8:30 am on the first day. After meeting your guide you will be given dry bags for packing and everyone will be briefed on the plan for the day. Your guide will select a kayak for you and help you pack your belongings. 

Your trip may end at a different location on the northern side of Casco Bay. In that case, you will be driven back to Portland, typically returning between 3pm and 4pm. Depending on the conditions and the route your guide chooses, you may also paddle a loop and end your trip back in Portland.

Muscongus Bay holds no major harbors, and its shores are sparsely populated. That makes it a much quieter and wilder environment than many stretches of southern Maine’s coast — and a perfect destination for sea kayaking. Hundreds of tiny islands scattered across the bay provide plenty of sites for kayakers to camp, while countless rock ledges offer harbor seals plenty of sites to haul out for a rest. While few large boats cruise these waters, this is prime lobstering territory, so lobster boats and buoys abound. Muscongus Bay is especially renowned for its rich birding opportunities and other wildlife-viewing potential.

##Where You’ll paddle
You’ll start this trip in one of two small fishing harbors — either Round Pond on the west side of the bay or Friendship on the east side. From there the group will island-hop towards the center of the bay, with possible camping spots including Thief Island, Black Island, Hog Island and Crow Island. Along the way you’ll find plenty of opportunities to observe seals and other wildlife. At some point you’ll likely paddle along the shores of Hog Island, which is home to a large Audubon Sanctuary and nature-study camp. If conditions allow, you may kayak into the outer islands that are most exposed to the ocean, potentially visiting Franklin Island lighthouse and enjoying views of Monhegan Island, one of the most remote inhabited islands on the Maine coast.

##Logistical Details
The group meets at 8:00 AM at Portland Paddle on the first day and will return by 4:00 PM two days later. Portland Paddle will transport the group 90 minutes north to the launch site, or you may choose to drive yourself. You should bring your own sleeping bag and sleeping pad, or you can rent them from us for an additional fee.

The seemingly endless clusters of islands between Penobscot Bay and Mount Desert Island offer all the elements of an idyllic environment for sea kayak camping: Abundant oceanside campsites, countless pocket beaches, infinite route options for exploration, and plenty of opportunities to find shelter from winds and waves. Each island has its own character, history and beauty, and many of them are part of the Maine Island Trail that this trip follows.  

Home to quarries that provided granite for Boston, New York, and D.C.s most iconic buildings, this coastline is also home to some of Maine’s prettiest coastline, where rocky shores and towering evergreens meet. While Acadia National Park draws millions of visitors to experience this environment, this trip provides paddlers with a chance to get away from the crowded hiking trails and explore it by water.

##Trip Overview
After meeting in Portland to get geared up and hop in the van, you’ll arrive on the pink-granite shores of Penobscot Bay, with views of the mountains of Acadia on the distant horizon. Over the following days you’ll island-hop towards those mountains, eventually reaching the shores of Mount Desert Island, where our van will be waiting to shuttle the group back to Portland. 

Each trip follows a unique route depending on the conditions and the group, but you’ll be sure to visit dozens of islands and experience many sides of this region. You can expect to paddle 5-8 hours each day at a moderate pace with plenty of island breaks. We limit the group size to 6 people, and often have fewer. 

##Logistical Details
The group meets at 8 AM at Portland Paddle on the first day and will return by 6:30 PM on the final day. 

##HIGHLIGHTS OF THIS TRIP:   
- Island-hopping through the Merchant’s Row archipelago towards the mountains of Acadia National Park
- Visiting dozens of unique islands, potentially including Isle Au Haut, the least visited section of Acadia National Park, and Green Island, with its beloved swimming hole in a historic granite quarry

Only a tiny fraction of visitors to Maine reach this sparsely-populated region, but it contains abundant wildlife, dozens of rustic fishing villages and long stretches of stunning coastline that are only accessible by boat.

And students will have the opportunity to use the skills and knowledge they’re learning during a day paddle to an island destination. If you think you’d enjoy becoming a sea kayaker, this workshop is a great way to get started. You’ll learn the essential skills, get to know Casco Bay from a paddler’s perspective and get connected with a group of fellow kayakers. 

##About Our Other Weekend Workshops 

**Navigation Skills Weekend Workshop**
Navigation Weekend focuses on the core skills necessary to navigate on coastal waters, especially when paddling in challenging conditions like those common in Maine, such as strong winds, swift currents, and fog. Students will learn various approaches to navigating with a chart and compass and gain firsthand experience using these skills while paddling on Casco Bay. They will learn and practice taking bearings, dead reckoning, triangulation, crossing boat channels, paddling in low visibility and using aids to navigation. After gaining familiarity with the key navigation tools, resources, and skills during the first day of the course, students will plan a trip for the second day that will give them opportunities to practice what they have learned. All are invited to an optional dinner on the first evening of the course. 


**Roughwater Skills Weekend Workshop**
Roughtwater Weekend will put you between a rock and a hard place, literally! Over this two day session students will have opportunities to gain experience with rock gardening, surfing, reading roughwater environments, risk assessment, and roughwater rescue techniques. We will paddle in Casco Bay and in the waters surrounding Richmond Island, seeking out opportunities to gain comfort in roughwater and experience with surfing and rock gardening. Expect to get wet! We will wear helmets at all times when paddling in roughwater, and they will be provided for those who don’t own one.   

**Expedition Skills Weekend Workshop**
Expedition Weekend focuses on the process of planning and executing longer- distance sea kayak tours. Students will spend the first morning planning a route to an island in Casco Bay that the group will camp on that night. Along the way, students will gain experience with key expedition skills, including effectively packing a kayak, meal planning, emergency equipment and communications, gear repair, efficient long-distance paddling technique and more. The group will spend the night camping at an island campsite, with all meals included in the cost of the trip.  Tents are also available at no cost for students who need one, and sleeping bags and pads are available for a small fee. This weekend is the perfect way to dip your toes in the water of multi-day touring!

**Women at Sea Weekend Workshop**
Learn, refine and develop your sea kayaking skills in a supportive, fun atmosphere. This special weekend is for novice to intermediate female identifying kayakers who want to feel confident, safe and independent in their sea kayak adventures. Gain the skills you need to expand your adventures on the water.

We will cover basic strokes, power and efficiency, rescue techniques and safety protocols, ocean dynamics, navigation and trip planning. You’ll be invited to accept new challenges and you’ll be supported as you grow and learn.

Navigation Weekend focuses on the core skills necessary to navigate on coastal waters, especially when paddling in challenging conditions like those common in Maine, such as strong winds, swift currents, and fog. Students will learn various approaches to navigating with a chart and compass and gain firsthand experience using these skills while paddling on Casco Bay. They will learn and practice taking bearings, dead reckoning, triangulation, crossing boat channels, paddling in low visibility and using aids to navigation. After gaining familiarity with the key navigation tools, resources, and skills during the first day of the course, students will plan a trip for the second day that will give them opportunities to practice what they have learned.

**Introductory Skills Weekend Workshop**
Intro Weekend is designed for anyone who is new to sea kayaking or with limited experience. We’ll cover everything we typically cover in our two-part Intro to Sea Kayak courses, but the weekend workshop will allow us to go a bit deeper into the fundamentals. And students will have the opportunity to use the skills and knowledge they’re learning during a day paddle to an island destination. If you think you’d enjoy becoming a sea kayaker, this workshop is a great way to get started. You’ll learn the essential skills, get to know Casco Bay from a paddler’s perspective and get connected with a group of fellow kayakers. 

**Roughwater Skills Weekend Workshop**
Roughtwater Weekend will put you between a rock and a hard place, literally! Over this two day session students will have opportunities to gain experience with rock gardening, surfing, reading roughwater environments, risk assessment, and roughwater rescue techniques. We will paddle in Casco Bay and in the waters surrounding Richmond Island, seeking out opportunities to gain comfort in roughwater and experience with surfing and rock gardening. Expect to get wet! We will wear helmets at all times when paddling in roughwater, and they will be provided for those who don’t own one.

Expedition Weekend focuses on the process of planning and executing longer- distance sea kayak tours. Students will spend the first morning planning a route to an island in Casco Bay that the group will camp on that night. Along the way, students will gain experience with key expedition skills, including effectively packing a kayak, meal planning, emergency equipment and communications, gear repair, efficient long-distance paddling technique and more. The group will spend the night camping at an island campsite, with all meals included in the cost of the trip.  Tents are also available at no cost for students who need one, and sleeping bags and pads are available for a small fee. This weekend is the perfect way to dip your toes in the water of multi-day touring!

Learn, refine and develop your sea kayaking skills in a supportive, fun atmosphere. This special weekend is for novice to intermediate female identifying kayakers who want to feel confident, safe and independent in their sea kayak adventures. Gain the skills you need to expand your adventures on the water.

We will cover basic strokes, power and efficiency, rescue techniques and safety protocols, ocean dynamics, navigation and trip planning. You’ll be invited to accept new challenges and you’ll be supported as you grow and learn.

Women at Sea Weekend Workshop

ACA instructor certifications are the industry standard for anyone teaching paddle sports skills. They are also beneficial for paddling club members, summer camp and school outing club leaders, or anyone who wants a rigorous and thorough way to improve both their own paddling skills, and their skills at transferring that knowledge to others. These courses are taught and assessed by ACA certified Instructor Trainers. 

Please also be aware that an ACA Skills Assessment is a prerequisite for participation in an Instructor Certification Workshop. Skills Assessments may be completed with Portland Paddle, Pinniped Kayak, or by a third party ACA Instructor.

This two hour tour begins on the small meandering stream of Panther Run, and continues upstream exploring each twist and bend to discover Maine's natural wildlife.  The tour proceeds on to Jordan Bay of Sebago Lake as we paddle beside lakeside cottages, boats, and manmade canals.  Here we will get a panoramic view of the sun as it sets behind the trees.  Along the way, the Registered Maine Guide will share anecdotes and answer questions.  This outing requires no previous experience and will be an easy, relaxed paddle!

## About the tour

Looking for a new perspective to see the vibrant colors of fall? Join us on this leaf-peeping kayak outing! This fun and relaxing way to get out and enjoy the hues of autumn.

After a brief paddling demonstration lead by a Registered Maine Guide, this outing will begin at the historical Gambo Dam and meander upstream of the Presumpscot River. You will be able to appreciate the quiet sounds of nature as the birds overhead continue south for the winter, fish surface for a snack and the vivid colors pop off the glassy stream.

This adventure will continue to the renowned Covered Bridge for a perfect photo opportunity. On the return, the guide will share stories about the immense impact this river had on shaping the Sebago Lakes region in its infancy.

Join certified yoga instructor, Amy Bissel, for an All-Levels Stand Up Paddle Board Yoga Class on Sebago Lake in Raymond, launching from the Sebago Trails private launch site.

Please arrive 15 minutes early to allow time to get on the water.  Attire may include either a swim suit or normal yoga attire, depending on comfort.  Paddleboard, paddle, and life jacket are provided.

## About the tour

Kayak through the natural Maine wilderness and vast lake views for an on the water adventure. This two hour guided tour will begin with a safety briefing and lesson covering the fundamentals of recreational kayaking. Using the EZ launching system at Sebago Trails Paddling, the tour will explore the water-carved bends and twists of a meandering stream unveiling local wildlife in a rustic backdrop. Then continue onto Jordan Bay of Sebago Lake as the guides share stories dating back to the settlements of the region.

##About
This is the course to take if you are new to sea kayaking — or if you started sea kayaking without gaining a solid foundation of skills and knowledge. You'll learn all the basics with a small group of other paddlers in the protected waters near our East End Beach site in Portland. Your instructor will get your group started onshore with a discussion of equipment and the risks and hazards kayakers face on the Maine coast. Then you'll get fitted into kayaks and head onto Casco Bay to learn proper paddling technique for the essential strokes of the sport.  Your instructor will do their best to customize the class to fit with each students' goals, experience level and interests.  At some point during the class you’ll have a chance to perform a wet exit, which is the simple technique used to get out of your kayak after a capsize. You are likely to get wet, so we recommend wearing a wetsuit. If you do not have your own, we will provide one for you. 

The Part II class is offered every other weekend and we recommend taking the two courses during the same summer, ideally followed by the Rescue Clinic.

- Proper technique for the essential paddling strokes 
- How to identify the major risks and hazards kayakers face 
- How to complete a “wet exit” when a kayak capsizes 
- The primary features of a sea kayak that make it seaworthy
