Wawaloam Campground
Richmond, Rhode Island
128 RV Sites
On roughly 100 wooded acres in the rural South County countryside of Richmond, Rhode Island, Wawaloam Campground has been delivering family camping experiences in one of southern New England's quietest and most scenic corners since the 1960s. The campground's mix of sun and shade, reliable amenities, and signature 287-foot waterslide have made it a Good Sam and TripAdvisor top-rated destination that draws loyal returning families alongside first-time visitors who discover southern Rhode Island's campground scene. In a state where outdoor destinations often compete with coastal crowds, Wawaloam offers a genuinely relaxed inland alternative.
Wawaloam operates as an RV-only facility—no tent camping—and full hookup sites with 30 and 50-amp service are complemented by water and electric options across the property's varied terrain. The waterslide is the campground's most talked-about feature, drawing guests specifically to experience the 287-foot run that ends with significant momentum and considerable crowd enthusiasm. A large, clean swimming pool and enhanced splash pad provide additional warm-weather water fun at a more relaxed pace. Mini golf, a basketball court, horseshoes, a fishing area, and a playground round out the active recreation options, and a snack bar, dining hall, laundry facilities, and camp store handle the practical and culinary needs of a weekend or week-long stay. The campground's pet-friendly policy ensures that dogs travel comfortably.
The 100-acre property gives Wawaloam a spacious, wooded character that makes even a full summer weekend feel less crowded than you might expect. The surrounding South County landscape—rolling hills, stone walls, and the working farms that have defined this part of Rhode Island for centuries—provides a pastoral setting that guests from the northeastern corridor find immediately restorative. Evening campfires and the particular quiet of rural Rhode Island nights mark the difference from the weekend beach resort alternatives along the coast.
Rhode Island's South County is among the most naturally beautiful and historically layered corners of the Ocean State. The Watch Hill area and the beaches of Charlestown, Westerly, and Narragansett are accessible for coastal days when the mood shifts to salt air and ocean. The Narrow River, Pawcatuck River, and multiple freshwater ponds and reservations provide kayaking, canoeing, and fishing within a short drive. The University of Rhode Island campus and the Kingston historic district add cultural dimensions, and the ferry service to Block Island—one of New England's most beloved day and overnight destinations—departs from Point Judith, easily accessible from Richmond.
Wawaloam Campground operates through the summer camping season, typically from late May through Columbus Day weekend. Summer weekends fill quickly on the strength of repeat bookings from families who have been coming to Wawaloam for years, and the waterslide creates additional demand on hot-weather weekends. Weekday stays offer a quieter alternative with considerably greater availability and more relaxed site selection. Book early for summer weekends, bring the swimsuits, and let southern Rhode Island's unfussy charm work its magic.
