The Castillo de San Marcos
St. Augustine was the first permanent European settlement in the continental United States, and this Castillo (completed in 1695) served primarily as an outpost of the Spanish Empire as they guarded the town. It also helped the Spanish protect the sea route for treasure ships returning to Spain. Now, this site with a complex history is not only a beautiful addition to the coast, but also a place where can get a glimpse into an important part of America’s past.
