On the western outskirts of Waukee, Iowa—where the rapidly growing suburb that has become one of Iowa's fastest-expanding communities meets the open cornfield and woodland character of the Dallas County countryside—Timberline Campground delivers the appealing combination its owners call "country camping with city convenience": shaded sites in a natural setting just one and a half miles from I-80, minutes from West Des Moines's full metropolitan amenity set, and an on-site recreation package including a pool, jumping pillow, arcade, volleyball, pond fishing, dog park, and community fire pit that makes a Timberline stay genuinely enjoyable regardless of what Des Moines has on the agenda for the day. Despite the highway proximity, the campground's acoustic separation means the traffic stays out of the experience. Full hookup sites with 30 and 50-amp electric, water, and sewer accommodate big rigs in a shaded property with WiFi, laundry, clean bathrooms and showers, a playground, propane fills, and firewood. The jumping pillow—the inflatable trampoline surface that produces the highest kid satisfaction per square foot of any campground amenity—and the arcade combine to create a self-contained entertainment environment for younger guests. A pond provides fishing access and the wildlife-watching opportunity that any body of water on the Iowa prairie reliably generates, including the great blue herons, red-winged blackbirds, and the wood ducks that nest in the area's scattered woodland patches. The general store handles daily supply needs and the community fire pit creates the social gathering point for evenings when the day's metropolitan activities wrap up and the campfire conversation begins. Waukee sits in Dallas County in the Des Moines metropolitan area's western expansion zone, in the Iowa Corn Belt landscape where the prairie soils that produce some of the world's most productive agricultural yields underlie the suburban development that has transformed the I-80 corridor west of Des Moines over the past two decades. The surrounding terrain reflects Iowa's characteristic gently rolling topography—the glacially shaped landscape of prairie potholes, drainage ditches, and occasional woodland remnants that creates the habitat for the pheasants, white-tailed deer, and the migratory waterfowl that make Iowa a nationally significant destination for upland bird and duck hunting in the fall season. Des Moines, accessible in 20 minutes on I-235 from the campground, offers the Iowa State Capitol with its magnificent gold dome, the Des Moines Art Center's nationally significant permanent collection in a building designed by Eliel Saarinen with additions by I.M. Pei and Richard Meier, and the Pappajohn Sculpture Park's outdoor sculpture garden in the Western Gateway Park. The Iowa State Fairgrounds, hosting the Iowa State Fair each August in one of the largest and most celebrated state fair events in the country, is a Des Moines institution with year-round event programming beyond the fair itself. The Greater Des Moines Botanical Garden and the Science Center of Iowa add additional family programming options within the metropolitan center. Timberline operates year-round in Iowa's four-season climate, providing access to Des Moines's full calendar of events from the Iowa State Fair in August through the holiday events that fill the downtown venues in December. The campground's summer is the peak period when the pool and jumping pillow are at maximum use, but fall pheasant season, the Iowa football culture centered on Iowa State in Ames and the University of Iowa in Iowa City, and the spring flooding of the Saylorville and Red Rock reservoirs' recreational areas create year-round reasons to use Des Moines as a camping destination. Reserve your shaded site at Timberline and let Waukee's convenient position deliver Des Moines from a campground that feels genuinely removed from the city it serves.
