In the 1920s, what began as an oil drilling attempt in Phillips County turned into a discovery of gushing hot water. This unexpected find eventually spurred community collaboration and evolved into the American Legion Health Resort, commemorating the unity and dedication of the local townspeople. When the benefits of the mineral-rich water became evident, efforts from various American Legion Posts ensured the water's continuous flow while mitigating any dangers.

Today, this Sleeping Buffalo Resort sources its water from a 3,200 ft deep artesian well, boasting a flow rate of 900 gallons per minute at a warm 108 degrees Fahrenheit. Visitors not only enjoy the healing waters but also the proximity to attractions like the Nelson Reservoir, Bowdoin National Wildlife Refuge, and the iconic Sleeping Buffalo Rock, making it a unique blend of history, wellness, and natural beauty.
