Stetson Shores Campground

Stetson, Maine

6 RV Sites, 11 Tent Sites

On the 29-acre wooded shore of Pleasant Lake in Stetson, Maine—in Penobscot County in the central Maine lake belt where the glacially carved basins hold the cold, clear, undeveloped lakes that Maine's north-of-Portland interior preserves in the specific pristine state that the state's low development density and the 17 million acres of public and working forest lands make possible—Stetson Shores Campground provides full hookup and water-electric sites with floating dock access, a private boat launch, canoe and kayak rentals, and the lakeside setting on Pleasant Lake's wooded shore that the campground's 29 acres maintain in the forested natural character that central Maine visitors specifically seek. The floating dock, the boat launch, and the canoe rentals constitute the water access infrastructure; the 29 wooded acres constitute the natural environment; Pleasant Lake constitutes the reason guests choose Stetson over a highway campground. Full hookup sites with 30 and 50-amp electric, water, and sewer connections serve the RV population, and water-electric-only sites provide the partial hookup alternative for guests in self-contained units. Every RV campsite includes a fire ring and picnic table and is within walking distance of Pleasant Lake's shore. Tent sites with fire rings and picnic tables are positioned close to the campground amenities. A floating dock provides the most immediate lake access—fishing, swimming, and the evening sunset gathering that dock-equipped Maine lake campgrounds generate naturally among guests who congregate at the waterfront as the day cools. A boat launch enables guests with trailered watercraft to access Pleasant Lake from the campground. Canoe and kayak rentals serve the guests without their own equipment. A fishing dock provides the bank and dock angling access without requiring a boat. A camp store, a recreation hall, dump station, clean restrooms, hot showers, laundry, playground, volleyball court, and horseshoe pits complete the amenity infrastructure. Pleasant Lake's natural character represents the specific water quality and ecological integrity that central Maine's undeveloped lake basins preserve. The lake's cold, oxygen-rich water supports the cold-water fish species—brook trout, landlocked salmon, lake trout—that Maine's lake country is famous for producing, and the bass and perch that the warmer surface water sustains in the productive shallow areas. Fishing Pleasant Lake from the campground's dock and launch provides the Maine lake fishing experience at its most direct and uncomplicated. The Pleasant Lake Preserve—hiking accessible from the campground—provides the protected natural land adjacent to the lake in the forest management arrangement that Maine's land trust community has developed to preserve the undeveloped character of the most ecologically valuable lake shorelines. Hiking the Preserve trails provides the forest walk through the northern hardwood and softwood mix that the central Maine lake belt's natural vegetation maintains in a state that 19th-century Maine timber practices altered but did not permanently destroy. Stetson Shores Campground is operated by Modern America Campgrounds and open seasonally through Maine's camping season. The fishing season, the summer lake recreation period, and the fall foliage season—when Maine's hardwood forest turns the lake's shoreline orange and red in the most spectacular single-season color display in the northeastern United States—create the three demand periods that reserve sites earliest. Book early for summer lake recreation weekends and the October foliage peak, arrange the canoe rental on arrival, and let Pleasant Lake's cold water and Penobscot County's 29 wooded acres deliver what Maine lake camping looks like in its most authentic form.
