Wild Fox Cabins and Campground in Lakeville, Maine, is a remote wilderness retreat on 155 secluded acres with 3,600 feet of pristine shoreline on Junior Lake in Penobscot County — an 80-mile drive northeast of Bangor into the undeveloped northern Maine forest that gives guests the specific experience of a genuine wilderness lake property accessible by paved road, where the spruce and fir forest, the loon-populated lake, the moose-frequented marsh edges, and the remoteness of the northern Maine interior deliver the wild New England experience that the state's coastal and southern lakes districts cannot provide at comparable isolation and natural integrity. Wild Fox's Junior Lake position in the Downeast Maine lake district gives guests the most accessible entry point into the northern Maine wilderness lake country that separates Bangor from the Katahdin region.
Cabin and campsite accommodations on 155 private acres with 3,600 feet of Junior Lake shoreline give guests the wilderness lake access that Wild Fox's secluded acreage specifically provides — the shoreline's length gives the property the lake frontage that most Maine wilderness retreat properties achieve only on smaller ponds, and the 155-acre extent gives the campground the buffer depth from neighboring property that sustains the wilderness character even during the peak summer season. Canoe, kayak, and small boat fishing access from the private shoreline is the campground's defining attraction. Pets are welcome.
Junior Lake is part of the Junior Lake and Bottle Lake chain in the West Branch Penobscot River drainage of Penobscot County — a remote, undeveloped lake system in the northern Maine forest that sustains the wild brook trout, lake trout, smallmouth bass, white perch, and landlocked Atlantic salmon fisheries that Maine's northern interior lake country specifically protects through the restrictions on lake access, motorized boat size limits, and the absence of the shoreline development that has degraded fishery quality in Maine's southern and coastal lakes. The area's moose population, black bear, white-tailed deer, and the common loon's nesting on the remote lake give Wild Fox its specific wildlife encounter appeal.
Baxter State Park, the centerpiece of the northern Maine wilderness experience, protects 209,501 acres of the West Branch Penobscot watershed surrounding Mount Katahdin — the 5,268-foot granite summit that the Appalachian Trail's northern terminus and Thoreau's 1846 "Ktaadn" essay made the defining mountain of the Maine wilderness mythology. The Knife Edge trail on Katahdin's summit ridge, a quarter-mile arête connecting the summit to Pamola Peak above the South Basin cirque, gives the experienced hiker the most technically challenging and most emotionally concentrated mountain experience available on any eastern United States trail. The park's strict vehicle reservation system and the permit requirements for Katahdin summit hiking require advance planning during the summer peak season from July through mid-September.
Wild Fox Cabins and Campground serves guests through the northern Maine outdoor season from ice-out in May through the fall moose season in September and October, with the summer lake fishing season from late May through August and the fall foliage and moose viewing from September through mid-October representing the two primary demand windows for the northern Maine wilderness lake market. The West Branch Penobscot River's spring whitewater below Ripogenus Gorge, 50 miles north of Junior Lake, provides the Class IV and V commercial rafting that gives the Katahdin Iron Works corridor its additional adventure programming for guests who combine the lake stay with a river day. Reserve cabins well ahead for the summer peak and the moose and fall color season, when northern Maine's limited wilderness accommodation fills from the New England and mid-Atlantic outdoor travel market.
