Lake Murvaul Park & Marina
Carthage, Texas
19 RV Sites, 5 Cabins
Lake Murvaul Park & Marina sits about ten miles southwest of Carthage, Texas, on a lake that's earned a reputation among serious anglers as one of East Texas's best-kept secrets. The campground offers a relaxed mix of camping, picnicking, and lakeside cabins, with swimming, boating, fishing, and paddling all just steps from the campsites.
Anglers come here specifically for the fishery: Lake Murvaul is known for largemouth bass that regularly top eight pounds, along with some of the best crappie fishing in Texas and healthy populations of channel catfish. Kayak and paddle boat rentals make it easy to get out on the water without hauling a boat, and the on-site marina serves up meals, snacks, and a full stock of lures and live bait for whoever's headed out to fish.
Spring and early summer tend to bring the best bass action on Lake Murvaul, while fall's cooler, calmer water draws crappie anglers in particular — useful to know when planning a trip around the fishing rather than the calendar.
Carthage itself adds a surprising amount of cultural ground to cover for a small East Texas town. It's home to the Texas Country Music Hall of Fame and the Tex Ritter Museum, the Panola County Veterans Museum and Memorial, and the Old Panola County Jail, now preserved as a museum with its original 19th-century cells intact. The Footprints in the Sand Monument, a local landmark of oversized sandal prints symbolizing a spiritual journey, is also worth a stop.
Whether the goal is landing a personal-best bass or spending an afternoon at the Hall of Fame, Lake Murvaul Park & Marina puts both East Texas fishing and Carthage's small-town attractions within easy reach. Book a cabin or campsite and find out what makes this lake a local favorite.
